Homology modeling of clinically-relevant rilpivirine-resistant HIV-RT variants identifies novel rilpivirine analogs with retained binding affinity against NNRTI-resistant HIV mutations

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which affects tens of millions of individuals worldwide, can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). While there is currently no cure for HIV, the development of small molecule antiretroviral agents has greatly improved the prognosis of infected individuals, especially in developed countries. Here, the authors employ homology modeling and molecular docking towards the identification of novel rilpivirine analogs that retain high binding affinity to clinically relevant rilpivirine-resistant mutations of the HIV reverse transcriptase enzyme.

Determining the Hubble constant through the analysis of Abell clusters

Determining the Hubble constant through the analysis of Abell clusters

Galaxy clusters offer several advantages for measuring H0 compared to traditional methods, such as Cepheid variables or Type Ia supernovae. Unlike individual stars or supernovae, clusters are less affected by local variations in stellar population or interstellar medium properties, providing a more stable and consistent measure over large cosmological distances. This work proposes using galaxy clusters as an alternative method for determining the H0. It provides an independent perspective on the H0 debate and contribute to ongoing efforts to reconcile the differing values obtained from the other two measurements.

Simulating single versus cocktail antibiotic effects on the human gut microbiome

Simulating single versus cocktail antibiotic effects on the human gut microbiome

This study, uses SimulATe to model changes in microbial diversity and community structure upon administering a cocktail of antibiotics versus a single antibiotic. The authors hypothesized that antibiotic cocktails, particularly those combining broad-spectrum drugs like tetracyclines and trimethoprims, would cause a more significant reduction in gut microbial diversity compared to single-drug treatments. The findings confirmed a greater loss of microbial diversity with combinatorial treatments compared to single-drug treatments. While individual antibiotics dynamically reshaped the surviving species of the microbiome, antibiotic cocktails frequently cleared all species of the gut microbiome.

OTGP: An innovative biometric authentication system with on-the-go passwords using a novel typing signature

This manuscript describes a new method of on-the-go passwords using typing characteristics. The authors developed a keyboard and keystroke recording setup and tested it with 30 participants. The results indicated the five chosen parameters are distinct across participants yet consistent across time for each participant, making it a plausible candidate for a behavior-based password system.

Leveraging transfer learning with convolutional neural networks for cardiovascular disease detection

This study shows the efficacy of leveraging transfer learning, specifically from residual networks, to detect CVDs and possible signs of CVDs. The findings indicate that leveraging transfer learning from residual networks alongside medical professionals is a highly promising approach for CVD detection and diagnosis, warranting further investigation.

VISTA inhibitor CA170 combined with KRAS vaccine enhances immune response in lung cancer

VISTA inhibitor CA170 combined with KRAS vaccine enhances immune response in lung cancer

Here the authors investigated a combination therapy to target the Kirsten rat sarcoma viral oncogene homolog mutation in lung cancer, by analyzing publicly available data. Their findings indicate that the combination therapy of CA170 and Kvax enhances helper T cell function and improves cytotoxic T lymphocyte infiltration, while Kvax alone drives plasma and memory B cell proliferation.
