In this study, the authors investigate whether the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting the mental health of teens. Using data from a study done in Islamabad, Pakistan, the authors find that many teens between the ages of 13 and 19 show signs of mental illness. This study reports important data regarding the mental health of youth and points toward an increased need to address this topic during the pandemic.

Crumpling is the process whereby a sheet of paper undergoes deformation to yield a three-dimensional structure comprising a random network of ridges and facets with variable density. The authors hypothesized that the more times a paper sheet is crumpled, the greater its compressive strength. Their results show a relatively strong linear relationship between the number of times a paper sheet is crumpled and its compressive strength.

Large language models are increasingly used to solve math problems, but their ability to handle multi-step reasoning remains uncertain. In this study, students tested whether different prompting styles could improve LLM accuracy on challenging AIME math questions and found that detailed step-by-step solutions did not significantly outperform simpler prompts. These results suggest that improving LLM mathematical reasoning may require deeper model-level advances rather than changes in prompting style alone.

Classical financial forecasting models often fail to capture the complex, nonlinear dynamics of the stock market. This study demonstrates that incorporating a single variable to represent the 'geometric curvature' of a time series dramatically improves the accuracy of standard econometric forecasts. Our findings highlight that geometric properties are a significant predictive factor, opening new avenues for more powerful financial modeling.

This article explored the question of when do people decide to stop gambling and further tries to extrapolate why people stop gambling at that point. Their study showed that people tend to quit gambling after 4 consecutive losses, significantly more than 1-3 consecutive losses or a win previous to quitting. They also found that participants commonly quit at a point value approximately 5 points greater than or less than their starting balance. The authors concluded that these results may be important in understanding how to cut down on excessive gambling or in creating policies that make it easier for people to disengage from gambling.
