Music's Effect on Dogs' Heart Rates

Music can affect the behavior of humans and other animals. In this study, the authors studied five types of music with different tempos and demonstrated how each one affected dogs' heart rates.

The Effect of Music on Heart Rate

Different songs can seem to evoke different emotions. Here the authors demonstrate that different songs can have a significant effect on the heart rate of listeners. A slower song slows heart rate, and a faster song increases it.

The Development and Maximization of a Novel Photosynthetic Microbial Fuel Cell Using Rhodospirillum rubrum

The Development and Maximization of a Novel Photosynthetic Microbial Fuel Cell Using Rhodospirillum rubrum

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are bio-electrochemical systems that utilize bacteria and are promising forms of alternative energy. Similar to chemical fuel cells, MFCs employ both an anode (accepts electrons) and a cathode (donates electrons), but in these devices the live bacteria donate the electrons necessary for current. In this study, the authors assess the functionality of a photosynthetic MFC that utilizes a purple non-sulfur bacterium. The MFC prototype they constructed was found to function over a range of environmental conditions, suggesting its potential use in industrial models.

Here the authors investigated the effectiveness of algal pretreatment in reducing nitrate toxicity and extending the survival of fish in contaminated river water. Their findings demonstrate that treating nitrate-polluted water with algae extended fish survival by up to 50%, suggesting that algae could serve as a valuable tool for mitigating the destructive impacts of agricultural and industrial runoff on aquatic ecosystems.

It's better than me: Investigating the psychological risks of AI on self-esteem

Here the authors investigated whether frequent use of generative AI tools triggers upward social comparison and negatively impacts users' performance self-esteem. Based on a survey of 121 adults, they found no significant relationship between AI usage and self-esteem, concluding that current chatbot interactions do not pose the same psychological threat as peer-based comparisons.

Legacy mercury, reservoir dynamics, and dredging effects on methylmercury in San Francisco Bay

Legacy mercury, reservoir dynamics, and dredging effects on methylmercury in San Francisco Bay

This study analyzes over two decades of monitoring data (1999-2022) to investigate how legacy mining, reservoir water releases, and dredging activities influence toxic methylmercury (MeHg) levels in San Francisco Bay. The findings reveal a significant delayed correlation between river flow and San Francisco Bay MeHg, and counter to the authors' hypothesis, a strong association between increased MeHg concentrations in the bay and both total annual dredging volume and beneficial sediment reuse / upland sediment disposal.

The ecological mysteries of Opheodesoma spectabilis : Seasonal trends, habitat preferences, and climate responses

The ecological mysteries of Opheodesoma spectabilis	: Seasonal trends, habitat preferences, and climate responses

This study examines how environmental conditions influence the abundance and ecological role of the sea cucumber Opheodesoma spectabilis in Kāneʻohe Bay. Field observations and laboratory experiments showed that the species is more common in algae-dominated sandy habitats, where it improves water clarity and increases dissolved oxygen through bioturbation. However, exposure to very high temperatures caused rapid mortality, suggesting that marine heat waves could threaten this species and the ecological functions it provides.
